Formative Assessment in the Secondary Classroom

This training will support teachers in understanding the key components of Formative Assessment: how to write learning objectives and success criteria; use effective questioning techniques; integrate feedback, self and peer assessment to maximise learning in their classrooms.

 

This course is suitable for all mainstream teachers in the Secondary and upper Primary years. The course offers a practical demonstration of Formative Assessment tools as well as the research which lies behind the strategies which are modelled.

  • By the end of this training, participants learn and leave the course confident in knowing:

    • the key strands of Formative Assessment and the research behind it which shows how it supports learning and achievement;

    • how to write effective learning objectives;

    • how to write effective success criteria which can be used to support learning through feedback, self and peer assessment;

    • the various methods of questioning which cause thinking and ensure high student engagement;-

    • how to integrate self assessment into teaching;

    • how to create the conditions for peer assessment.


The Outstanding Classroom

A Toolkit for locally trained teachers 

This training will support teachers in understanding the key components of outstanding lessons. 

 

This course is suitable for all teachers, especially locally trained teachers who work in international schools. The course offers a practical demonstration of pedagogy as well as the theories which lie behind the strategies which are modelled. The course builds on prior learning and the context of the school to support the further development of teachers in an international context.

Training Format & Outline

  • • Provides an understanding of how students learn

    • Explains how lessons should be structured to maximise learning

    • Explores and models a range of active learning methods including use of talk

    • Collaborative learning, plus visual, auditory and kinesthetic methods to aid the learning process

    • Provides an understanding of the key components of differentiated instruction

  • • Explores core principles in behaviour and classroom management

    • Considers active revision methods (relevant for all ages) to use in the classroom in the lead-up to exams

  • By the end of this training participants learn and leave the course confident in knowing:

    • understand what we mean by learning;

    • how we learn based on pedagogical research;

    • have an understanding of how the brain likes to receive information;

    • how to structure lessons to maximise learning and memory;

    • which methods to use to achieve set outcomes;

    • how to integrate VAK methods into lessons to utilise all learning styles simultaneously;

    • how to integrate collaborative learning strategies to guarantee engagement in lessons;

    • how to support EAL learners;

    • ways to differentiate instruction to create inclusive classrooms.
